Our goal is to find the difference between eating acidic food and base food. Using our knowledge on the digestive system, and the help of the internet, we made a research concluding that saliva is not produced as much with base food than with acidic food.
Research Question:
If you consume a large amount of a base food, will your mouth create more saliva than when consuming a large amount of an acidic food?
Hypothesis:
Saliva glands will create more saliva when eating base food because when consuming acid food, a drying reaction may occur.
*Please note that all the materials were needed and that the procedure was done in a clean and spacious table. .
First, we placed the fruit on top of the cutting board and cut it equally so there was enough for two procedures for both team members.
Second, one of our team members filled both a plastic cup and two graduated cylinders with water.
Third, we placed the foods on a plastic plate and gave each tester their own graduated cylinder, while opening our laptops and entering our google docs and sheets.
Fourth, we told our group members to eat a small piece of watermelon and swallow it completely, after chewing of course.
Fifth, after letting them consume the pieces of watermelon, we waited for exactly one minute.
Sixth, after waiting, we asked them to place the saliva they had in their mouth into their graduated cylinder.
Seventh, when the saliva was placed into the graduated cylinder, we measured how much saliva was collected for each person
We then repeated these steps with the following fruits and chocolate listed below, recorded in the table.
Although you need both acidic and basic food in your everyday meal, Our body organism can only function properly if it is in acid-base balance. But there is a major difference between the both. Acidic food or rather known as Alkalinizing foods mostly consist of some fruits and meats, fish, eggs, dairy products, other citrus fruits except some berries. These produced a large amount of acid in the body, meaning the body can not contain an acidic balance of meals causing the body a great amount of damage. Including, the decrease in the body’s ability to absorb minerals, other nutrients, as well as it decreases the the energy production in the cells. Lowers the ability to repair damaged cells, make tumor cells thrive and it makes it more susceptible to fatigue as well as illnesses. although , if there is an acid molecule that hits a base molecule, a neutral salt molecule is formed that can be excreted without being able to cause any harm. However, if there are more acids than bases in the body, the organism won't get rid of the acids; the tissue becomes more acidic, and a variety of medical complaints and diseases can occur, such as cancer and other illnesses. Bases or Alkaline foods cause a whole different reaction towards the body, that consist of most fruits, green vegetables, herbs, spices, seeds, and nuts and many other products are considered based food. Alkaline food helps benefit the bodies ph. If someone eats more based food than acidic food 60%-40%of the skin is more elastic, youthful, as well as great digestion and less arthritis. But how effective is the difference between acidic food and basic food towards the production of saliva? Salivary glands form a part of the digestive system, in which the process starts in the mouth as well as the saliva. Acidic food may cause teeth to become discolored and as a result the tooth enamel and weakness, then demineralization starts to occur making harder for saliva to continue with it process of eliminating and cleaning the mouth causing a higher amount of saliva to be produced. Base food reduces the amount of bacteria in the mouth, reducing the risk of cavities and tooth decay allowing for less saliva to be produced.
Data:
We had two trials for each food with two different people, who are a year difference in age.
Date Analysis
The data demonstrates that acidic food create more saliva than base food because of a lower pH.
Giving the fact that each person had the same amount of food and had the same amount of time to create saliva and spit in the testing tube, no one had an advantage.
Oranges were the food that created more saliva.
Chocolate was the food that made the least amount of saliva.
Discussion of Results
Group reviewing our results, we came up with the conclusion that base foods don't make saliva glands to produce as much saliva as when consuming acidic food. Food like oranges and blueberries send signals to your saliva glands in order to make more saliva to control the acidity that is being consumed. We also recognize that foods like watermelon, with low acidity, doesn't make as much saliva as acidic food.
Conclusion
Our research question and hypothesis were wrong. The food that created the most amount of saliva are acidic food not basic food. We believed that acidity lowered saliva when it actually created more pH level.
Answering our Reaserch Question
We were wrong because acidic food created more saliva than basic food.According to our research, it demonstrates that oranges, which are acidic, created a higher rate of saliva than blueberries, which had a less amount of saliva when it was tested based on how it's a basic food.
